I haven’t seen the movie in full so this is not relevant. I have always had a means of going somewhere (does being born a Sagittarius have to do with it?) I’ve realized that it is a rare occasion to have experienced just about all modes of transportation when traveling. So let’s talk about that….
My very first memories of being in a vehicle other than a car were in an 18-wheeler with my father, who drove professionally until I was 21 years old. It wasn’t until I went to Ghana that I developed a new understanding of carpooling or car-sharing--ooh that congested space. I love driving. I get that from my dad. My nickname is Lead-foot. By now I have been to 20 of the 50 states; one day I plan on visiting the 50 states on a U.S. road tour. I have a husband who has only been to a handful of them, so as my travel companion, God willing, we can accomplish that together.
My first flight was around age 5. My mom and I were flying to New York City to meet my grandmother for the first time. Oooh, how I hated lift off and turbulence. Due to that one round-trip experience, I did not want to fly ever again. However, my first time flying again was to layover in Charlotte, North Carolina before meeting up with my group to travel to Costa Rica (my first international trip); this was my first time flying in 10 years and it was by myself before I was even 18. Was I scared? Heck yes! But over the years, I have managed to deal with it.
A train is my all time favorite mode of transportation! The first memory I remember is riding the Amtrak. Too bad the prices are increasing on a regular. My mother told me ever since I was a little girl, I would get excited about seeing a train approach the railroad track, as I waited for the Tri-Rail while living in South Florida. Once I moved to Maryland, I had a different perspective on trains as I had to wait for the metro in the frickin’ cold. As nasty as the NYC subway can get sometimes, I am still fascinated by how it is the main mode of transportation for New Yorkers and gets people to where they need to go on time...most of the time... I cannot wait to experience the fastest train in the world.
I've done it all, even a boat and a motorbike. Having been in 8 countries, each trip had a different means of transportation. My favorite memory thus far is the motorbike. While in The Gambia, we had to cross the border to Senegal, but after getting through the checkpoint, we have to get transported to the other side in order to continue. That was my first time being on the back of a motorbike (Motorcycle) and boy was it a 5-minute thrill ride! I wouldn’t do it for regular enjoyment, though; I’ve seen and heard too many horror stories.
I have not been on an American cruise. My first time was on an overnight cruise (ferry) from Portsmouth, England to Caen, France. Prior to that, my first times being on a boat was a ferry in Chattanooga, TN and a water taxi in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I am a Florida girl so naturally I am a water girl; I am looking forward to going on a cruise.
Let's not forget about one of the most simple yet blessed modes of transportation: our own feet. One of the greatest parts about traveling is the new experiences; especially when it comes to experiencing a different type of transportation than what you are used to.
What is your favorite mode of transportation?
